That Storage Thing

I’ve been asked by a couple of people to talk about storage and organisation. Because storage is a nightmare if you live in a small space like I do, not that I’m complaining I adore living on my university campus, just storage is a serious problem pretty much every single day of the year. I wish I were lying but with only a cupboard and a couple of drawers to store so many things in, it’s a daily struggle trying to find where I’ve put everything. I’ve found the biggest life saver has been containers. Large containers, small containers, white containers, clear containers, you name it, containers, containers, containers. As you can see I keep pretty much all my makeup in two separate drawers. I keep these near my mirror as they roll around, and in those I have three containers and a bunch of other related items rolling around the back. I bought all these containers from Kmart for a few dollars a set, and from there everything has then been divided into categories for easy access.

I’ve found the biggest thing about having very little space is you have to prioritize. At home, I have a kit with most of my costume makeup. I generally keep the things like stencils, mesh and a heap of fine detail brushes in a huge box in my room at home, and everything else here. That’s not to say I don’t keep costume makeup here, I’ve just found I have to be a little more smart about how much I keep. As far as costume makeup goes, I keep a white cream facepaint, a yellow, a black and a green here and that’s it. It covers most of the party themes that have come up in the past year. Although it’s a little sad I can’t access all my glitters and things here, it’s the sacrifice that’s had to have been made unfortunately.

As much as it kills me, my general rule here is, if you don’t use it, it can’t stay. So I find myself regularly moving through these products as they are products I have tried, tested and liked and keep going back to time and time again. Which probably explains why I have three or four of some of my lipsticks, I have the worst habit of losing lipsticks so I tend to find they vanish quickly once outside the container then I find them in my car months later, but at least when they are here I can see what I’ve got. I’m a bit of a hoarder. I was actually considering depotting all my lipsticks when I gather them together again but it’s a job for another time, that and I quite like the look of them when they are all stacked up like this, but let me know if you’d like to see something on that in the comments below and I’ll see what I can do.

I keep all my nail polishes and nail related products, stencils, stamps etc. in a separate clip container, my perfumes on a shelf, my tans in another container and then all my lotions, body butters etc. elsewhere in another container again because they build up and like I said: CONTAINERS, CONTAINERS, CONTAINERS. There’s so many and I’m not even sorry. Again, Kmart has been a life saver with these and at most they were $8 or so each. Another great place to look for storage solutions has been the reject shop and eBay. I’m a big believer in eBay, I most likely inherited this from my dad who also loves to shop there. Really, there’s a storage solution for pretty much every problem if you are willing to go on a bit of a hunt for them. IKEA is great for shelving, as is Kmart surprisingly and often ALDI of all the places has some useful storage solutions. I’m pretty sure I keep my university notes in what is meant to be a multi-stack slice and biscuit container.  I guess the best piece of advice I can give is to look around, find something that works and go with it.

While this situation for the storage of my makeup isn’t ideal, it works well enough for now. If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know.
